Harris & Allied Families of Kentucky

Ancestor's "Lost & Found" Department

Descendants of Dabney and Mary Harris

This Harris genealogy begins with Benjamin Harris Sr. from about 1766/69 - 1815, he is the son of Dabney and Mary Harris Sr and grandson of Christopher and Mary Dabney/Harris of Albemarle Co., VA, then of Madison Co., KY. It is family tradition that his wife ANNA was of Indian heritage. Our HARRIS branch migration pattern starts out in Washington Co., VA, and then during the winter of 1804 or spring of 1805 the family removed into Pulaski Co., KY. Some of the HARRIS children remained in Jessamine, Garrard and Pulaski Co., KY after the death of their father in 1815, others moved on to MO, IN, IL, OK, OR, and areas in-between. Surnames related to Benj & Anna's children and grandchildren are: JASPER, DEWEESE, SMITH, VANHOOK, BURKET, HALL, WILSON, BROWN, and CASH to name a few. We know that there was a very close relationship of our "Benjamin Harris Sr." with his brothers, Dabney Harris Jr. and Christopher Harris. We know that our Harris Family was Baptist, per the "Old Fishing Creek Baptist Church" minutes where Ben and Anna were received by letter and Dabney Jr was received by experience. Ben's two sons, Tyre and Benjamin Jr., were Baptist ministers and both removed to Indiana, along with Dabney Jr.

We base our research on this most valued advice, given us by a long time researcher:

Geneticists at Stanford U are of the belief some of us amateur genealogists are being led astray by this DNA stuff!!!  I think it is all kind of fun, but to base family history on that factor alone is being unrealistic!!!

Hard work is still the answer, but perhaps not the whole answer.  Before we genealogists got hooked by DNA testing [to probably avoid a lot of hard work], a DAR genealogist told me these guidelines.

She said:

1) You have to determine who the associates were. Always watch such things as witnesses, chain carriers in the land grants, who were the administrators or executors of an estate, etc.

2) You have to determine the watercourses on which each lived.

Our note: While we believe that DNA is a useful tool, it can "only" point a researcher in the right direction, it "can not" tell you which of the many, many males in a "given group" you may belong to.

We are HARRIS cousins "reunited", and formed the"HARRIS SLEUTH~KATEERS"

Solo we've struggled to just find a "clue",

The library, LDS, message boards, so much to do,

So together we band to find something "new",

Is Anna an "Indian"? We heard that it's true,

Now we've "data" a-plenty, new families too,

Ol' Ben will be "connected", by the time we are thru!!!

A few months later......

We've combed all our data and guess what is new?

Ben is the son of Dabney, our paper work says that it's true!

We didn't stop there we scoured every clue,

Then we found brother's Christopher & Dabney Jr, & a sister, Mary "Polly", too!

                        "Ellie"

*Special thanks to Lillian Densley, and Ralph Harris for all the hard work and endless hours of sleuthing.
